Chelsea’s attacking prowess and resolute defence were on display as they earned their first win of the Champions League campaign after defeating Krasnodar by 4 goals.
Antonio Rudiger made his first Chelsea appearance of the season as Lampard made four changes to the side that faced Manchester United. Reece James, Pulisic, Kante dropped to the bench, while Ziyech, Kovacic and Callum Hudson-Odoi started the game.
Krasnodar welcomed Swedish internationals Kristoffer Olsson and Marcus Berg as Brazilian winger Wanderson remained sidelined due to injury.
The hosts got off to a decent start as Chelsea squandered possession on quite a few occasions in the opening 10 minutes and allowed Krasnodar players to take shots from distance. However, it was the visitors who got the chance to take the lead when Werner was clipped in the box by Kaio as the attacker tried to collect Azpilicueta’s pass. Chelsea’s designated penalty taker Jorginho stepped up to take the penalty, but his shot cannoned off the post and off the goalkeeper. Vilhena’s shot at the other end deflected of Zouma and nearly squeaked into the bottom corner with Mendy flat footed. Chelsea opened the scoring in the 37th minute after Safonov let Callum Hudson-Odoi’s shot squirm under him into the net. The home side tried to up the ante, but couldn’t break Chelsea’s defence as the visitors took a 1 goal lead into the break.
Both teams had half-decent chances in the opening 15 minutes, but couldn’t convert any of them as Chelsea started to dominate possession. Krasnodar nearly equalised in the 55th minute when Gazinksi’s volley ballooned over Mendy, but rebounded off the crossbar. The home side continued to pile more pressure as Chelsea found it difficult to retain possession. Lampard, finding Chelsea losing midfield control made a triple substitution by bringing on Kante, Mount and Pulisic for Jorginho, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Kovacic. Having weathered the storm, Chelsea were rewarded a controversial penalty after Pulisic’s shot hit Martynovich’s midriff, and then onto his forearm. Werner stepped up in Jorginho’s absence and rifled home his effort in the top left corner to give Chelsea a 2 goal lead, and some breathing space.
Ziyech quickly added Chelsea’s third by swivelling and finding the bottom right after being found by Werner in the penalty spot. Lampard replaced the goalscorer Ziyech with Tammy Abraham and Chilwell with Emerson, as Chelsea tried to shut the game out defensively. Krasnodar replaced Utkin, Olsson and Berg with Sulemanov, Spertsyan and Sabua with few minutes remaining on the clock. However, there was still time for Chelsea to score their fourth goal of the night through Pulisic, whose fierce shot squeezed through Safonov’s legs.
