Chelsea continued their unbeaten run to comeback from an early first half goal and win against Leeds United to go top the table. In a game of two halves, Werner’s double miss didn’t prove costly as the Blues recorded their sixth win of the campaign with Christian Pulisic opening his account in the stoppage time to seal three points.
Patrick Bamford returned to Stamford Bridge with a bang as he opened the scoring for Leeds in the 4th minute through a counter attack by rounding the onrushing Mendy and slotting it in the near post. Werner was guilty of missing a simple tap in from two feet away at the back post as the striker scuffed his first shot, and the second shot rebounded off the bar. Giroud joined the guilty party shortly after the France international intercepted Meslier’s cross and dragged his shot wide with Werner in acres of space. However, Giroud redeemed himself in a few minutes by scoring the equaliser for Chelsea after connecting with James’s cross. Ziyech, who was involved in the build up to Chelsea goal had to be replaced by Pulisic after injuring his hamstring.
Chelsea started the second half brightly and stroked the ball with confidence and intensity. Raphinha missed a glorious chance to score after a Thiago Silva clearance from his first shot fell back to him, but fired his second attempt well over the bar. A save and a block at the other end from Meslier and Alioski prevented Werner and Mount from scoring Chelsea’s second. Zouma, who already scored three goals this season scored his fourth in his usual fashion by heading Mount’s corner to give Chelsea the lead in the 61st minute. Werner’s miserable night continued as he missed an easy opportunity to score by shooting straight at Meslier. However, the German made up for his misses by squaring a pass for Christian Pulisic in the stoppage time to score Chelsea’s third and seal the win.
Speaking to reporters after the win Chelsea manager Frank Lampard confirmed Ziyech suffered a hamstring injury and will be assessed in the next couple of days. Lampard said there is nothing wrong with the fans thinking about the title challenge and added “It was great for the fans to be back, but it’s a long season and we have to show how consistent we can be. We have a long way to go and we have to be grounded.”
