A spirited second half performance helped Manchester United comeback from a goal down to defeat West Ham and move to 4th position in the table. Having been the second best in the first half, United bounced back in style by scoring two goals in three minutes to return to winning ways after their midweek defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
West Ham kicked off the half with real intent as Dean Henderson, who replaced the injured De Gea was called into action early to deny Fornals at his near post. Hammers continued to push forward and dominate the midfield as Fornals and Haller went close to open the scoring, with the latter’s effort coming off the post. West Ham deservedly led in the 38th minute after an unmarked Soucek at the back post tapped in Rice’s glancing header from a corner. Haller was guilty of not scoring after running through on goal and rounding the goalkeeper, only to slip at the vital moment and allowing Henderson to get back and gather. Fabinaski, much of a spectator for most of the first half pushed Martial’s effort around the post as the Hammers led at the break.
Solskjaer made a double change at the break by replacing Danny van de Beek and Edinson Cavani with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford. Bowen missed a great chance to double Hammers lead after meeting Coufal’s strike and firing into side netting. United punished West Ham for their misses with an equaliser in the 65th minute through Paul Pogba, who curled an unstoppable effort into the top-right from Bruno’s cut-back.
The Red Devils quickly took the lead through Mason Greenwood, who drilled into the far right-hand corner after connecting with Telle’s cross. United started to dominate possession and nearly scored a third after Rashford’s strike cannoned off the post. However, Rashford was on target minutes later to double United’s lead by chipping his effort over Fabianski after being played through on goal by Mata. Cresswell’s attempt to reduce the deficit from a free kick was brilliantly tipped over by Henderson as the Red Devils secured a vital away win to move into top four.
