Chelsea in a better position to challenge for title, say Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea are on a fine run collecting 22 points, two behind Tottenham and Liverpool, and have not lost since losing to the defending Champions in September. Chelsea, who conceded the most number of goals of all the teams finished in top ten last season have now conceded the second least number of goals, showing a dramatic improvement from last season.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes Chelsea’s defensive improvements are due to their summer signing Thiago Silva. Speaking on The Gary Neville Podcast the defender said “Chelsea are impressing me, they have a real chance. I think Chelsea have more of a chance than Tottenham for the title. They have Kante, they have Thiago Silva, players that could navigate them to it. There’s a winning culture, Roman Abramovich wins trophies. They have good players and players that can do the ugly side of the game. They’re a real threat.

They won 4-0 in Seville and then ran Leeds off the pitch. They’re an adaptable team, a team that can take on what Lampard wants them to do. One week it’s “I want you to change, sit off, be measured, don’t get hit by the Mourinho trick and get counterpunched. Sit back, we’ll get chances and we’ll win 1-0”. He made sure they didn’t lose the game and that’s a mature coach that does that.”

Rio Ferdinand echoed his former teammate’s thoughts and said Thiago Silva has become an important player for Chelsea. Speaking on Rio Ferdinand presents FIVE the former Manchester United defender said “What can I say. Chelsea are on absolute fire, they are flying. Frank Lampard has got his team confident, they go a down goal, it’s no problem, they are confident. And who is at the base of that? The foundation of that, for me, would have to be the man Thiago Silva. He’s come in, the experience he’s got, played in big games all around the world. I think they go a goal down or things ain’t ticking for them but he sits there at the back, everyone looks to him for inspiration.”
