Solskjaer hints at Cavani contract extension

The Uruguayan joined Manchester United on a free transfer in October, and has gone on to become an important asset to Solskjaer’s side. Although Cavani has been used more as an impact substitute, Solskjaer believes the forward will start more matches going forward.

Cavani, who has scored three goals in eight Premier League matches came off the bench to create Bruno’s goal against Leicester on Saturday. Speaking to reporters, Solskjaer said “Edinson has a few years left in him so I wouldn’t say anything else. He has made a great impact and I trust him.

He is definitely a starter. You don’t classify a player of that quality as anything else. I trust him and he will probably start more games than he won’t.”

Cavani had to wait for his introduction in Premier league after having to self-isolate following his arrival from France, and then had to build up match fitness after leaving PSG in June. However, the United forward has settled down quickly and provided the much needed impetus up front.

Solskjaer revealed Cavani had asked for the number seven shirt at Manchester United, previously worn by legends such as George Best, Bryan Robson, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Norwegian added “It was the first thing he asked me, if he could wear the number seven. Obviously we are talking about the history of the shirt but when you think of his career, the experience he has had and his personality from the chat I had with him and when I watched him before, it wasn’t in doubt that he could handle it.”
