Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Manchester United edged past Aston Villa to go level on points with leaders Liverpool. Goals from Anthony Martial and Bruno Fernandes ensured United started 2021 with a win, and extend their unbeaten run in Premier League to 10 games.
Anthony Martial, who has struggled for form this season scored just his second goal in the Premier League against Aston Villa. The arrival of Edinson Cavani, and Marcus Rashford’s imperious form has resulted in Martial starting just 12 games in Premier League this season. However, Solskjaer believes the France international is getting back to his best.
Speaking to reporters after the win against Villa, the United manager said “We’ve had some chats, of course. We have spoken about last season and how important he was for us then and he is going to be important for us this season.“
“Player’s form is temporary but when you have got class that is permanent. I think he has proven he is class. Now he is getting fitter and fitter and that means he is going to get better and better.”
“Anthony is going to improve. He’s going to be better and better. He’s had a few chances this season. He’s still creating chances, he’s just not had that little bit of luck, margins in front of goal. They’ll come. We saw a better version of Anthony tonight. A more confident one.”
Manchester United will be in action on Wednesday against their noisy neighbours in the EFL Cup semi-final, and Solskjaer will hope Martial continues his goalscoring run.
