Arsenal’s forgotten man has posted a cryptic tweet following reports in Turkey that he is set to join Fenerbahce. Ozil, who was left out of the Premier League and Europa League squads by Arteta has repeatedly insisted on seeing out his contract at the North London club.
With the January transfer window now open, Arsenal have been trying to reach an agreement with the former Real Madrid man to mutually terminate his contract. However, the German, who received offers from MLS and Middle East clubs has decided to stay at Arsenal until his contract expires.
Turkish journalist Berkay Tokgoz have claimed that Mesut Ozil is set to join Fenerbahce by this month, and would wear number 23 shirt.
Ozil has fuelled more speculation by posting a picture of him in the city of Istanbul, captioning “This city … #throwback #Istanbul.”
According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Ozil was granted permission by Mikel Arteta to miss training. Speaking on Ornstein and Chapman Podcast, he said “I don’t think there’s any great expectation on behalf of the club or the player that he is going to be reintegrated.”
“He seems to be training with the first team. I think he’s been given a bit of time off with the club’s blessing just recently, so I don’t know if he’s with the first-team setup as we speak, but he has been throughout the season and from what we hear, his fitness is in good shape.”
“We know about his technical level, there’s no match fitness whatsoever. He’s not played a single second of football since lockdown in March, so I’d be, as I said before, very surprised and I think that there’s no expectation, really, at this point in time on behalf of the club or the player that he’ll be playing again for Arsenal.”
