Alisson ensures Liverpool remain unbeaten at home

The table toppers played out an entertaining goalless draw against the reigning champions to ensure they remain three points clear at the top. Liverpool failed to score for the third game in a row, and are now winless in their last four matches. United had the better of chances late on, but failed to break the deadlock against a makeshift Liverpool defence.

Liverpool took early control of the proceedings as Thiago and Shaqiri controlled the midfield, with Fred and McTominay left to chase the forwards. Manchester United found it difficult to get a foothold in the game, as Firmino and Shaqiri missed a couple of half-chances from the edge of the box.

United resorted to counter-attacks, but were left frustrated with the huge number of offside calls, especially with 4 for Rashford. Bruno Fernandes went close to open the scoring for United through his free-kick, but saw his effort flew inches wide of the post.

Liverpool continued to dominate possession, but missed the elusive pass in the final-third to trouble De Gea. The half panned out as expected, with Liverpool dominating the play, but neither team tested the opposite goalkeeper.

Both teams continued with their approach in the second half, as Liverpool forced United to camp in their own half. There were a couple of vital blocks at both ends, first from Fabinho on Bruno, and next from Maguire on Firmino.

Alisson produced a smart save to deny Bruno Fernandes with his feet after the Portuguese stabbed at Luke Shaw’s cut-back in the six yard box.

The Brazilian was at his best again to deny Pogba with a brilliant stop after the France international lashed his effort from Wan-Bissaka’s cut-back.

Both teams settled for a point at the end, but Manchester United would feel they missed out on the opportunity to get a win. Liverpool on the other hand would be quite happy with their point, especially with the defensive pairing of Henderson and Fabinho.

Harry Maguire’s reaction

Speaking after the game, Maguire admitted United were happy with the point earned, but were disappointed with their first half performance. The United defender added “I thought they started the game better than us, and then in the second half we were braver on the ball and created the best two chances.”

On another day we win the game. It was cagey but it was two good teams matching up. We found it difficult to get a rhythm in the first half – we knew they would press high but the intensity.”

You could see our intent in the second half. I haven’t been in the dressing-room but I’m sure we’ll feel a little disappointed in there. But it’s a point, it’s a tough place to come and we’ve got to move on.”

I think you can see from our performance here, compared to last year [that we have improved as a team]. It was a tight, edgy game last year but we weren’t brave on the ball, we were a bit timid and we didn’t play on the front foot.”

Jordan Henderson’s reaction

Henderson admitted Liverpool were disappointed with the result, especially with their first half performance. The Liverpool captain added “We’re a bit disappointed we haven’t taken the three points. We did enough to win the game, especially first half – a lot of the ball, creating chances, just couldn’t find the back of the net really.

We knew they were dangerous on the counter-attack, their record away from home speaks for itself. But I thought our counter-pressing was good and we limited them to one or two moments. A clean sheet is a positive for us.”

We just lacked that quality in the last bit. Our performance level hasn’t been up to the standard in the past few weeks, as we know, but it’s a strange season for everyone. We’ll not stop now. The performance was very good today and that’s all you can do, leave everything on the pitch.”
