Mesut Ozil’s transfer to Fenerbahce moved a step closer as the midfielder said goodbye to his Arsenal teammates on Sunday before boarding a flight to Turkey.
The former Real Madrid man is set to undergo medical at Fenerbahce tomorrow after his representatives agreed with Arsenal to terminate his contract on mutual grounds. Ozil is expected to sign a three-and-a-half-year deal with the Turkish giants Fenerbahce after expressing his desire to play in Turkey over a Twitter Q&A session with fans.
Fenerbahce confirmed on Sunday that they are in negotiations with the former Germany international, and also informed the investors and Turkey Stock exchange about the same.
The Turkish club confirmed Ozil’s departure from London on Twitter and posted, “Club Statement: Our club is bringing Mesut Ozil to Istanbul to continue the transfer processes.”
The midfielder uploaded a picture of him and his family before the journey to confirm his departure from London.
Speaking to NTV on phone, Ozil confirmed he would arrive in early hours of Monday to complete his move to Fenerbahce. The midfielder added “I am a Fenerbahce fan. That is why I am very happy to be coming to Turkey with Fenerbahce. I’m very excited. God gave me the chance to wear this jersey as a Fenerbahce fan. God willing, I will carry it with honour and do everything I can for the team.”
“Of course, I’m missing a few matches. I haven’t played in a match in a while, but I am physically fit, I have no issues.”
The move will draw curtain on Ozil’s seven-and-a-half year career with Arsenal after arriving from Real Madrid in 2013. The German helped Arsenal win three FA Cups in his first four years at the club.
Having signed a hefty 350,00£ a-week contract in 2018, Ozil was expected to play an important role for Arsenal. However, the midfielder was sparingly used by Unai Emery, and was left out of the Premier League and Europa League squads by Mikel Arteta.
