Liverpool dropped to fourth place in the table after their goalless draw against Manchester United at Anfield. Manchester City moved to second place after their win over Crystal Palace, and Leicester City moved to third with a win over Southampton.
Jurgen Klopp’s men have now failed to score in their last three games in a row, and in the process have picked up just three points from their last four games. The result sees Liverpool sit just one point above fifth place Tottenham at the half-way mark of the season.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Jurgen Klopp said securing Champions League football by finishing in top four is more important than defending the title. The Liverpool manager added “For me, it’s not important where we are in the moment – it’s important that we have points and we are around this group.”
“For that you need points. We are in the middle of a bunch of teams which fight for this spot and that’s what we have to do.”
“It’s not about if we don’t become champions, it’s not fun anymore. We just fight for everything and I saw that tonight again.”
“The most important thing is to qualify for the Champions League and I know how difficult it is. This season it will be a tough race for the top four.”
On Liverpool’s goalscoring form
Liverpool failed to score for three consecutive matches for the first time since 2005. Klopp said he was not worried about the lack of scoring goals as his players were still creating chances.
“The performance was good enough to win but to win a game you have to score goals and we didn’t do that, that’s why we had that result.”
“There is nothing fundamentally different, just the result is different. We try and score and we try not to not score.”
“We have to not worry about it, but we obviously have to ignore the fact and hope it will come good again. We did that, but the only possibility we have is to create situations and be ready to fail, and then do it again. That is a massive difference to when you are flying, because then you deal with the missed chances better.”
“I saw my team playing tonight a really good team with a clear idea with super passes and great counter-pressing and great desire to score and we didn’t score.”
“We will create chances and we will score. It is not as if we decide we will score a goal and now we will do it. I will help as much as I can to change the situation.”
