Chelsea eased past a gritty Luton side to progress to the fifth round in FA Cup competiton. A Tammy Abraham hattrick sealed the win for Lampard’s side, who will now face Barnsely in the fifth round.
Lampard’s men were not troubled for most parts of the match, as the visitors were left to chase the game after Abraham scored a quick-fire double in the opening 20 minutes. Chelsea missed the opportunity to score their fourth goal after Timo Werner’s penalty was saved by Sluga in the 86th minute.
Werner has now scored just once in his last 16 appearances for Chelsea in all competitions. Speaking after the win Lampard praised Werner for his performance, and added “I’m disappointed for him as Timo gave a lot with his performance today.”
“He was a threat behind, his link up with Tammy, his link up with people around him, it’s (the penalty miss) just one of those things.”
“When it’s not going for you, it can happen. I missed penalties, I know the feeling. I know he will feel despondent, maybe now and the last few minutes of the game, but he shouldn’t be.”
“It’s my job and his teammates’ job to lift him and he will be fine.”
“It was almost a sign of what’s going on for Timo at the minute, it’s not quite dropping for him. But there will be a time when he takes penalties without thinking about it and hits the back of the net without thinking about it.”
