Werner helps Chelsea close the gap on top four

Chelsea continued their impressive run under Thomas Tuchel to earn their third successive win by defeating a gritty Sheffield United side 2-1. Timo Werner, who has gone over 900 minutes without scoring in the league, put in a man-of-the-match performance by providing the assist for Chelsea’s first goal, and earned his side a penalty after being brought down the goalkeeper.

Speaking after the win Tuchel admitted he was happy with his team’s performance against a physical Sheffield United side. The German added “When you arrive in Sheffield in February, you know what is waiting for you. It feels like a cup game when you arrive here, against a team full of energy, and very ‘couraging’, and a very direct and physical team.”

You have to accept that not all moments in this game are easy, and we accepted it, and that was good. We stayed all the time positive. We had some difficult moments and I’m happy with that, and it was a deserved win. From that you build confidence.”

We had some moments when we could control the game in the middle, when we find the solution under pressure . We played a bit too much back to escape the pressure. We can work on that. These are the moments when you invite your opponent to come into your half. The first 10-15 minutes were difficult and we were lucky with the penalty.”

On Werner’s performance

When Timo plays like this, we are very happy. The first goal was an amazing run and amazing assist. The goals will come, if he continues like this, I do not worry.”

Brilliant run to assist the first goal and excellent decision making for the second to go around the keeper. I think the Tottenham game gave him a boost.

On Jorginho’s penalty techniques

I ike them both as they are both in the net. I will never tell a player how to take a penalty because I layed football at a low level and you can feel the pressure. No advice from me.”

On finishing in top four

Will it help to talk about it? We are close to where we want to be and to try everything to reach it. We set it clear when we started it. We are hunting the teams in front of us, but we will change nothing.”

On Pulisic’s absence

He has some family issues to solve. Family is always first.
