Thiago Silva to miss Champions League match against Atletico Madrid

Chelsea travel to Bucharest ahead of their round of 16 Champions League clash against La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid. Having been unbeaten since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival, the Blues will be hoping to continue the run against Diego Simeone’s side in the Champions League.

On injuries

Speaking to reporters ahead of their departure, Thomas Tuchel confirmed Thigao Silva will miss the tie having failed to recover from the injury he suffered during their away win against Tottenham. The German added “This is a game that is certainly made for someone of Thiago’s quality but unfortunately he is not available. He is training right now, while we are leaving shortly.

I’m very happy that both Kai and Christian are in the group. They trained with us earlier and had no complaints. They will travel with us and they are in the squad for tomorrow.”

On Atletico Madrid

The Chelsea Head Coach admitted it’s a big test for Chelsea to play against a well experienced side, but insisted his team would fight with a good mentality. Tuchel added “Of course it’s a big test.”

They are an experienced club at his level with an experienced coach. Hopefully it brings out the best in us. We will do things our way, they will do things their way. It’s clear what you get when you play Atletico: fighting, experience, a team with a good mentality.”

Clearly it’s a disadvantage for Atletico Madrid to lose their home ground for the first leg. We don’t have to talk around that, it’s obvious.”

I think we are well equipped, I love what I see on a daily basis at Cobham. I love what I feel, I love what I see with the intensity, the quality and the hunger in training.”

Here at Chelsea, I feel a strong club. I have a strong bond with the players and I have complete trust in this group and the quality of each individual. When you get to this stage, you have to perform to your absolute maximum.”

I’m very happy and excited to arrive in Bucharest because every time we arrive, I see a good response from the boys and I expect the same tomorrow night.”

We have the possibility to take 23 players, we can make five changes and it gives us lots of possibilities tomorrow.”

On Hudson-Odoi’s reaction after Southampton game

Tuchel revealed he held positive talks with the Chelsea midfielder after hauling him off in second-half against Southampton having come on as a substitute during half-time. The German added “It is not a big thing at all for me.”

I have spoken to Callum, and I’ve spoken to the whole group. Sometimes, these things happen in football and it was just my decision.”

Maybe I was being harsh on him because he was on my side of the pitch and I was up close to him, but I did not feel that he was really into the game.

I didn’t think he was totally sharp and that is why I took a hard decision on him. But that decision was in the moment and for that day only. For me, this is absolutely not a big thing and only becomes one if people want to talk about it.

Callum has been fantastic for me so far and it’s on him to show me that every game and every day in training. I want him to show me that he is a reliable guy for the team when he comes on from the bench like he is when he starts.”

He has started a lot of games for me and in this instance, he has taken a hard decision. Now he must swallow it and come into training ready to work ahead of Atletico, a game which he has every chance of starting.”
