Chilwell praises Jorginho and Kovacic after Porto win

Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell has praised his teammates Jorginho and Kovacic after their 2-0 win against Porto in the quarterfinal first leg. The England international scored his first Champions League goal to give Chelsea a vital two goal advantage for their second leg.

Thomas Tuchel’s men bounced back from their defeat to West Brom emphatically to take a giant step towards qualifying for the semifinal. Speaking to Chelsea TV after the game, Chilwell admitted it was a tough game. The Chelsea left-back added “We knew the kind of game it was going to be, tough game, they’re a physical side and they showed that with their physicality, wanting to try and be aggressive with us which we knew would be the case and I think we matched them.”

We knew we’re up there with the top teams when it comes to playing football but the test for us was showing that physicality and making sure we levelled them with the physical side of the game and I think that’s the main reason we came through and had a good result.”

They’re a great side, a top team in Portugal, you’re in the quarter-finals of the Champions League so you know you’re going to be up against a tough team whoever you play and that was the case.”

They had great players all over the pitch: quick, strong, physical players that wanted to run and pass forward and be aggressive with us. We matched that and came through with a clean sheet which is also important.

Speaking on Jorginho and Kovacic, Chilwell said “I think the midfield were brilliant. Kova and Jorgi played brilliantly, dictating the midfield. ‘When we came under spells when we were under pressure they were brilliant at keeping the ball and just giving us a bit of a breather.

The former Leicester City player admitted he was surprised with his decision to go around the goalkeeper to score his goal. He added “It was kind of instinctive to be honest. I’m not normally in those sort of situations so I don’t get to practice those sort of things too much in training. I’ve gone through to the keeper and I’ve seen a space on one side and my first thought was to try and go near post and try and curl it near post.”

I don’t know what came over me to try and go around him! Thankfully it paid off and first goal with the right foot and first Champions League goal as well.”
