Liverpool’s miserable run at Anfield continued as they failed to score against Real Madrid in the second leg of their quarterfinals to get knocked out of the competition. In a game where chances were at premium, the Reds were guilty of missing scoring opportunities from great positions.
The Reds almost got off to a perfect start when Salah was in the Madrid box to meet a square pass from Sadio Mane, but could only direct his shot straight at Courtois, who saved the Egyptian’s effort with his feet.
The Belgian goalkeeper swatted away Milner’s curling effort heading into the top-left corner as the hosts continued to attack Real Madrid with high tempo. The Reds were lucky at the other end not to concede a goal after Benzema’s attempted square pass was intercepted onto the post by Kabak.
Wijnaldum missed a great opportunity in the final minutes of the first half to pull one back for Liverpool after being set up by Trent-Alexander Arnold. However, the Netherland international blazed his effort well over the crossbar from six yards out.
Liverpool started the second half just as the first, as Firmino belted his effort right at Courtois after Trent-Alexander Arnold found the Brazilian brilliantly crossed with the outside of his boot.
Real Madrid continued to threaten the hosts with their counterattacks, as Alisson rushed from his line to smother Vinicius flick, and then reacted quickly to stop Kroos from following up on the follow-up.
It was the visitors who looked threatening in the final minutes of the game as Benzema’s headed effort bounced off the ground over Alisson onto the top of the net. Courtois was called into action in the final minute of stoppage time to smother away Salah’s effort from a tight angle.
