Liverpool missed out on the opportunity to move into Champions League places after conceding a stoppage time equaliser to Newcastle United in their 1-1 draw at Anfield. The Reds were guilty of wasting a hatful of chances against the Magpies, as Dubravka starred for the visitors with some vital saves.
The reigning champions got off to a perfect start as Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the 3rd minute by smashing home his effort after Mane’s cross was deflected by a Newcastle defender into the Egyptian’s path.
Alisson was called into action in the 29th minute to deny Longstaff with a smart save after the Newcastle midfielder sneaked behind Liverpool’s defence. Salah missed an opportunity to double Liverpool’s lead as the Portuguese smashed his volley inches wide of the post after Newcastle’s attempt to play out from the back was intercepted.
Salah continued to miss chances for Liverpool, as the Egyptian slammed his effort straight at Dubravka after sent through on goal by Jota. The Newcastle goalkeeper was at it again as he produced a smart save to deny Roberto Firmino’s effort from the middle of the box.
The visitors had a couple of great opportunities to equalise in the opening minutes of the second half, but were denied by some smart saves by Alisson. Firstly, the Brazilian rushed out to gather Joelinton’s flick after the Newcastle forward was played through on goal, and then denied the striker again from a quickly taken freekick.
Dubravka was called into action to deny Firmino at the near post after the Brazilian lashed his effort from a tight angle. The Newcastle goalkeeper frustrated Liverpool yet again as he made an excellent save to push behind Sadio Mane’s effort at the near post.
Newcastle thought they had equalised in the 3rd minute of stoppage time through Callum Wilson, who poked home the rebound after his initial effort was well saved by Alisson. However, the goal was chalked off after replays showed the ball came back off Wilson’s arm.
Just when Liverpool thought they had done enough to secure all three points, Joe Willock scored the equaliser for Newcastle in the final minute of stoppage time to earn his team a vital point. The on-loan Arsenal forward collected Gayle’s header and smashed home his effort to punish Liverpool for their wastefulness in front of the goal.
