Chelsea Head Coach Thomas Tuchel has backed his misfiring striker Timo Werner amidst the German’s goalscoring woes. The Chelsea forward was guilty of missing another glorious opportunity to open the scoring in their Champions League semifinal first leg tie against Real Madrid on Tuesday.
Speaking to reporters ahead of Chelsea’s game against Fulham, Tuchel backed Werner to score more goals. The German added “Are we happy when he misses a chance like he did in the last game? No.”
“Do we wish for more goals? Yes. Does he wish for more goals? Yes. It is not about quality. It is about confidence and momentum. It is about trusting his instinct more and not overthinking it.”
“It is easier said than done. I never scored a goal in my career. If I did it was like birthday and Christmas on the same day. He should keep his head up. This is what he does, this is what he used to do.”
“What is the worst case scenario when the next chance comes? That he misses the chance. Billions of people never have a chance to take. So take the next chance.”
The Chelsea Head Coach confirmed Kovacic and Rudiger will miss the Fulham game as the Croatian midfielder had minor setback after recovering from the muscle injury, while the defender picked up a knock in the Real Madrid game.
“He (Kovacic) trained with us but he’s still not fully confident. He felt something at the end of the training so he’s not available.”
“Before training today, we thought Kova has a big chance to join us latest for Madrid, maybe even for Fulham, so now we have a little setback with him. I don’t want to be too negative. Let’s see how he feels tomorrow.”
“All other players are available except for Toni Rudiger who got injured in the last minute of the Madrid game. I am quite positive for Toni [being available] for Wednesday.”
