Tottenham’s top four hopes dealt a blow after Leeds defeat

Tottenham Hotspur’s flickering hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League were dealt a serious blow after they were defeated 3-1 at Elland Road by Leeds United. The defeat leaves Spurs five points adrift fourth-placed Chelsea with just three games left in the season.

Speaking to reporters after the defeat, Ryan Mason admitted he wasn’t sure if Spurs’ top four hopes ended with the Leeds defeat. The interim Spurs manager added “I don’t know. Look, today is a disappointing result for us.”

We wanted to come here and win the game. We haven’t done that. That’s very disappointing. We have to get over this and we have to work well this week and hopefully get three points next weekend.”

The Spurs manager also criticised VAR’s decision to chalk off Harry Kane’s goal for a marginal offside, and said “Goals change games of football. I’ll be honest when I saw it on the touchline I thought it was onside.”

The first time I watched it I thought it was onside and I’ve watched it three or four times since and my opinion hasn’t changed on that. The momentum, the whole feeling of a football match, can change because at that point it stayed 1-1 and at 2-1 it’s a completely different game of football. It was disappointing that we didn’t get the decision there.”

On asked if the players put enough effort to win the game, Ryan Mason said “[Leeds] started well and they had a lot of energy. They’re probably the fittest teams in the Premier League so we knew it was going to be difficult early on.”

Unfortunately for us we conceded early on which was tough, but we came back into the game and obviously disappointed to go in at half-time 2-1 down.”

The players showed they wanted to win. They came out and they believed in a certain way. They created chances, created some big moments in that second half where we probably needed to take one at 2-1 and to make it 2-2 would have made it a completely different game in the last 15 minutes.”

We had to open up because we were chasing the game and they caught us on the counter. So a disappointing afternoon for us.”
