Chelsea’s fierce rivals Tottenham helped them secure Champions League after their 4-2 comeback win against Leicester City at King Power Stadium. On a dramatic final day of the season, Leicester City looked poised to clinch the qualification, only to collapse in the final 15 minutes to help Chelsea move into top four, who lost 1-2 to Aston Villa.
Liverpool secured third spot after a convincing 2-0 win over Crystal Palace, with Sadio Mane scoring both the goals. Leicester City, who missed out Champions League qualification last season in a similar way have no one but themselves to blame for this season’s collapse, as they lost five of their last nine games.
Despite holding the destiny in their own hands, Chelsea were left to rue wasting numerous opportunities as former Chelsea player- Bertrand Traore scored the opening goal, and won a penalty in second half. Although the Blues improved in the second half to pull one back through Chilwell, they couldn’t break down a defensive Villa side late on.
Speaking to reporters after the defeat, Thomas Tuchel admitted his team were lucky to qualify for next season’s Champions League. The German added “We are lucky that Tottenham did the job for us today.“
“We came to win and put any doubts to the side but it was not possible. We were in the position though to get top four if we lost, that was possible because of our hard work and results.”
“I knew three or four minutes before our game was over that Leicester was done eaerly. It was the main target, but we did not prepare for the ocassion today, we prepared for the match.”
Tuchel provided an update on Mendy, who was replaced at half time after sustaining an injury while trying to keep out Traore’s goal. The Chelsea Head Coach added “Edouard, he fell on the frame. He has big pain in his ribs, we need to wait when we get home to do some images. We will see if it is possible.”
