Jose Mourinho has opened up on his previous managerial stints at Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. The Portuguese was appointed as the manager of AS Roma after being sacked at Spurs in early April.
Mourinho was unveiled to the press on Thursday after putting pen to paper on a three year deal at Stadio Olimpico. Speaking to reporters at the unveiling Mourinho insisted his time at Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United should be seen as a success.
Despite leading Spurs to the League Cup final, Mourinho was sacked due to a poor run of results in the league. However, Mourinho claims his role at Spurs should be seen as an improvement. The Portuguese said “I won three trophies at Manchester United and that was seen as a disaster.”
“I reached a cup Final which I was not allowed to play at Tottenham, and that was seen as a disaster. What’s a disaster for me is considered as a great success for others.”
“In my last three clubs I won the title at Chelsea, three cups at United, a Final at Tottenham, we arrived sixth, reaching the Europa League. What’s considered a disaster for me it’s something that others have never achieved, it’s my fault.”
Having known for his feisty relationship with players for calling out them publicly, Mourinho insists he will always defend his player when the situation demands. He added “Many things can happen and I will give everything to defend my players, but I won’t be the one looking for troubles, I don’t have time for that.”
“I have more experience now, so I am more solid emotionally, but I will always defend my club.”
