Italy defeated England on penalties to win the European competition for the second time in their history. Despite taking an early lead, England missed three successive spot-kicks after Bonucci equalised for the Azzurris in the second half.
England were off to a fast start as Manchester United left-back gave an early lead to after lashing home a first-time volley from Trippier’s cross, which left Donnarumma with no chance.
Italy mustered to create a couple of chances in the first half but weren’t able to trouble Pickford in the goal, as Chiesa dragged a shot narrowly wide and Immobile’s first-time volley was well blocked by Stones.
Chiesa troubled England yet again as he danced his way past three England defenders to take a shot, only to see Pickford produce a fine diving save to push his effort away. England threatened at the other end through Stones, whose mistimed header from a corner drew Donnarumma to tip the ball over crossbar.
Italy’s pressure paid off eventually as Bonucci equalised in the 67th minute by tapping home a rebound from close range from a corner after Veratti’s diving header drew a save from Pickford that rebounded off the post.
Pickford made a vital save to deny Italy a second goal by rushing off his line to deny Berardi after he latched on to Veratti’s pass over the top. Italy received a flurry of yellow cards at end of regulation time trying to deny England a winner, and pushed the game to extra-time.
Italy had a great chance to take the lead through Bernardeschi, who just missed to connect with Emerson’s pass, which allowed Pickford to clear away the danger by pushing the ball away. Both teams huffed and puffed in the extra-time but couldn’t find the decisive goal, and England brought on Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford late on to get ready for penalties.
Berardi and Kane scored their penalties, while Belotti missed and Maguire scored to give England the early advantage. However, Rashford, Sancho and Saka missed their spot-kicks, while Bonucci and Bernardeschi scored theirs to help Italy win the tournament for a second time after 1968.
