Tuchel opens up on learnings from Premier League

Chelsea Head Coach Thomas Tuchel has opened up on the learnings from last year’s Premier League season. Having arrived midway through the season, the German produced a remarkable turnaround to help Chelsea finish in the top four, reach the FA Cup final, and win the Champions League.

With majority of the senior players just returning from an extended summer break due to Euro 2020 involvements, Tuchel has been working with the players from Academy and those who were loaned out last season. Speaking to Chelsea’s official website on managing loaned players, Tuchel said “I have never had that before. That was new, I was not scared about it, but I was curious to see how the mentality is because don’t forget, some of them leave their families behind, some of them want to stay in their loan clubs, some of them have not that possibility.”

Some of them have done two or three pre-seasons here already. Some of them want to look absolutely for the chance to stay, some of them want to maybe leave. They’re humans, they’re not robots and that’s why we have to accept it’s not the easiest situation also for them.”

I don’t judge on where you come from or what your history is, or what you earn or what your status is. I’m in charge of this group so they get my 100 per cent. I give my everything, they give it back, they make me smile, I give even more, that makes them smile, they give even more.”

You try every year to create a certain atmosphere where everybody is happy to come, everybody feels valued, everybody feels confident but everybody knows at the same time what is expected from them and then you have to live up to your talent.”

These guys are full of talent and now it’s on us to push them to their highest level possible. Then we will decide is this in the moment good enough for us, does this help us, is it better for the player to go on loan or get sold. This comes as the last step in this give and take.”

Speaking on the Premier League experience he gained last season, Tuchel said “It was learning on the job and it was like fast-forward learning. What we knew about the Premier League came true. It’s a very, very demanding league, the most demanding league in Europe right now, and we have to be on point to reproduce the kind of performances that we have already shown. We need to forget success and restart from scratch, this is the challenge in sports. This is what we demand from ourselves and then we demand it from the players.”

To prepare for the Premier League we are having very intense training sessions and a lot of double sessions. It’s my first pre-season here and we have the help of outstanding staff, outstanding fitness coaches and analysing department monitoring everything. So we have big, big help.”

Without them it’s not possible. The pre-season is like this because of the months of the Premier League and we train very, very hard and the staff are preparing this in a fantastic manner. This is nice to watch, sometimes even demanding to watch, and the players are fully aware of it and give their very best.”
