Lukaku helps Chelsea defeat Arsenal

Romelu Lukaku scored on his second debut for Chelsea to defeat a depleted Arsenal side 2-0 at the Emirates stadium. The Blues scored twice in the first half through a dominant display, and managed well the second half to claim their second win on the bounce.

As expected, all attention was on Romelu Lukaku, who started ahead of Timo Werner alongside Kai Havertz and Mason Mount. The Belgian took just fifteen minutes to open his account as he tapped in Reece James’ pass from close range. Lukaku tormented Arsenal defence with his physical strength and provided space for Chelsea forwards by drawing out the Gunners defence on multiple occasions.

Reece James, who provided the assist for Lukaku scored Chelsea’s second in the 35th minute by hammering home his effort into the top-left corner. The Blues were in complete control of the game heading into the break as Arsenal fans booed their players for their first half performance.

The Gunners started the second half with high intensity and forced Chelsea to defend deep in their half. Edouard Mendy’s fingertips were needed to tip over Saka’s fierce effort from 25 yards as Arsenal tried to get back into the game. However, Chelsea weathered the storm and controlled possession for the remainder of the game through their slick passing.

Leno denied Lukaku his second goal of the game by tipping the forward’s powerful header onto the crossbar. The Blues held on to win their second game without conceding a goal, while Arsenal are yet to score a goal this season.

Lukaku’s reaction

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game Lukaku said “I am very happy with the win, we played very well and dominated. We could have scored more but coming here with this performance, we have to continue like that.”

I try to improve every time, I have a long way to go but today was good to win. We have to win and keep going, the Premier League is a very competitive league. I try, I try. At the end of the day, you want work hard for the team, score and create chances. I have worked on that and this team is very talented. They are the European champions and they want to keep building and I want to keep winning. We have to keep fighting and keep delivering performances like this.”

It is good to start like this, I worked hard throughout the week, we knew wit was a big game and we did well. As an individual, I want to help the team and I want to continue doing that.”

Tuchel’s reaction

Speaking to BBC Match of the Day Tuchel said “I was impressed with the result at half-time. We could have played better. We were not as sharp as we can be. We digest a long week as we gave them a big load with players coming in late. From time to time there were heavy legs and sloppy in passing. But we overcame the difficult moments with quality and luck. We controlled the match in the second half. Still room to improve.”

On Romelu Lukaku, “We don’t expect too much. We know his profile but we did not give him too much information of how to play for us. He has his strengths and he linked up well with Mount and Havertz today. Now we can work on the details. He scored and was always dangerous. He adds something to our game. We can play more direct. He is experienced enough now to be clever on the field.”
