Man City and Liverpool share points after a thrilling game

Liverpool and Manchester City had to settle for a point each after an entertaining match at Anfield that burst into life in the second half. A four goal blitz in twenty two minutes, two each by Man City and Liverpool ensured the spoils were shared before heading into the international break.

Manchester City were the better team in first half as they dominated the proceedings as Liverpool struggled to contain the visitors. Despite the domination City failed to score in the first after going close through De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva.

Liverpool shrugged off their first half performance to come out steaming in the second half to take control of the proceedings. Sadio Mane opened the scoring for Liverpool after a sweeping counter attack as Salah ran at the City defence to play the Senegalese international through, who slotted his effort in the bottom left corner.

Manchester City equalised through Phil Foden in the 69th minute as the England international placed his effort in the far right corner with a crisp finish after Jesus weaved his way through Liverpool defenders.

Salah handed Liverpool the advantage in the 76th minute as he went past three City defenders to rifle home his shot past Ederson into the far left corner. City however responded back quickly through De Bruyne, who whipped a left foot strike past Alisson. Fabinho almost won the game for Liverpool in the final minutes, but his right foot effort into an empty net from 2 yards out was blocked brilliantly by Rodri.

Pep Guardiola

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola praised his players and Liverpool for the incredible game. The Spaniard added “What a game! This is why Liverpool and Man City are always up there, we try to play this way. Congratulations to Liverpool and to my players. We have had an incredible week, playing three incredible teams. We could not win this but at least we did not lose.”

This is why the Premier League the best. Like in Paris, in Stamford Bridge, we should have win but yes (we couldn’t finish). Phil is a special player, he came back from internationals injured but he is okay. He is fantastic.”

James Milner? It is yellow card. Is a yellow card. It is too much clear. If this was a CIty player he would get sent off. There is interpretation sometimes but not here.”

Big fan of Jurgen, admire him. But we have shown these last three games we are a great team. Hope everyone comes back from internationals okay.”

We cannot expect to score four every game, Salah and Mane are going to get chances and score. At Anfield they have momentum.”

Jurgen Klopp

The Liverpool manager admitted his side were very poor in the first half, and were lucky to head into the half without conceding a goal. He added “Thank god a football game has two halves. We did a lot wrong in the first, and City did a lot right. I was the most happy to hear that half time whistle in my career! If someone missed the first half they would think Liverpool had been really good.”

Man City with the ball is a proper team. You have to close them down. Their first idea is to play down the centre. If they cannot do that then they leave their wingers up and play wide. I don’t think I have seen City have many easier games at passing through the half space. And this all gives you a bad feeling, and when you have a bad feeling it is hard to play football, so we try for the long ball but they made no sense.”

So from half time the message is to play the extra pass. The game has two halves, and a point is completely fine. It would be cheeky to ask for three points today because I cannot forget the first half.”
